What is HEMS?

Specialist training for doctors, paramedics and flight nurses who wish to work within a helicopter emergency medical service (HEMS) to provide advanced medical care in the pre-hospital arena.

What does HEMS cover?

The UK HEMS Helicopter Crew Course provides the clinician with the skills and knowledge to practice within a physician led medical team providing the highest level of clinical care to the seriously ill and injured patients in the challenging pre-hospital environment. The Instructors are all doctors and paramedics currently serving within a HEMS system with vast knowledge and expertise in pre-hospital care. The course consists of lectures and realistic moulages concluding with written and practical assessments.

Course Options

Our SPHERe™ course is also available and is suitable for individuals and group bookings. SPHERe™ course provides the pre-hospital medical professional with advanced training in pre-hospital resuscitation to enable them to deliver elite, high-quality care in the critical emergency of cardiac arrest.

Course Content

The aim of the course is to educate the student to practice as part of a doctor paramedic team delivering the highest level of care to seriously ill and injured patients in the challenging pre-hospital environment.

The syllabus includes:

  • Topics cover all aspects of major trauma recognition and management including:
  • Serious head injury
  • Chest injury – skills include thoracostomy / thoracotomy
  • Burns
  • Penetrating and blunt trauma injuries
  • Catastrophic haemorrhage
  • Rapid Sequence Induction (RSI)
  • Sedation and Analgesia
  • Patient Packaging
  • Management of life threatening illnesses

Entry Criteria

Doctors, state registered paramedics and flight nurses who are working, or who have been selected to work, in a HEMS role. Doctors must be able to provide evidence of at least 6 months of anaesthesia practice.
