I realised I had a knack for being calm in a crisis when working as a personal assistant; from there, I volunteered with the British Red Cross as a First Aider before joining the Scottish Ambulance Service.
Having qualified as a state registered paramedic, I've worked in a range of different environments, including motorsports, acting as a senior member of the Abu Dhabi Formula 1 Grand Prix medical team for several years, in addition to working as a HEMS Paramedic and Rescue Crewman for the Abu Dhabi Desert Challenge. Further to this, I have worked in remote and austere environments, including Iraq and Zambia delivering both clinical governance and research roles in these regions. Closer to home, my pre-hospital role has included operational EMS, pre-hospital Primary Care specialisms, and, most recently, my Critical Care role, which sees me working alongside Consultant-led PHEM teams across Scotland, attending complex incidents including pre-hospital resuscitation, major trauma and complex cases. On the side, I volunteer with a children's charity that delivers summer camps for kids with severe and life-threatening medical conditions.
Many aspects of EMS practice are very closely regulated and controlled, with Standard Operating Procedures defining clearly the actions and decisions that EMS providers must take. However, my role as an Advanced Practitioner allows me an enormous scope of clinical decision-making, and I'm lucky to be supported by a group of clinical seniors who strongly advocate for this level of autonomy.
When out of uniform, I'm never happier than playing obscure board games with my family. I love entertaining and really enjoy cooking big complex meals for groups of friends; I'm lucky to live in a part of Scotland with epic walking routes nearby and often enjoy days in the mountains with a buddy. As winter approaches, I'm looking forward to getting up and out into the snow!
I've worked with Prometheus Medical for several years, initially as a Clinical Instructor, then latterly as an Operations Manager for our private medical solutions. Now a Clinical Advisor, my role allows me to utilise my clinical experience and expertise to assist clients with "real world" challenges in their practice. Prometheus Medical has always been a pragmatic, practical organisation with a deep foundation in "on-the-ground" clinical practice – it very much suits my approach!
