Prometheus People

The people behind Prometheus make up some of the country’s most respected and practised medics in the field of major incident and crisis medicine. Who better to have on your side when planning for or dealing with a medical emergency?
This Primary Medical Support Team has many years expertise of developing and delivering pre-hospital and clinical care in military and civilian situations, in both the UK and overseas.

Dr Malcolm Russell

Managing Director

Actively practicing pre-hospital immediate care for over ten years, Dr Russell has served most of his career as a doctor in the British Army working extensively with some of the UK’s most elite military units. He was central in the development of concepts of combat casualty care.  He held the prestigious post of Senior Lecturer in Pre-hospital Emergency Medicine at the UK Royal Centre for Defence Medicine.

As a civilian Dr Russell has worked with several ambulance services including the London Helicopter Emergency Medical Service and been involved in training paramedics and emergency care practitioners.  An experienced GP, Malcolm has also worked in emergency medicine and anaesthetics in a hospital environment.  He has been actively involved in pre-hospital emergency medicine (part of the charity, the Mercia Accident Rescue Service). He has planned and managed medical support to various expeditions including the Army Everest West Ridge expedition, 2006.

Mr Kevin Gallagher

Commercial Director

Since joining Prometheus in March 2006 as the Commercial Director, Mr Gallagher has guided the rapid growth and development of the Company. He is invaluable at developing integrated business solutions between Prometheus and its clients in the public and private sector. Mr Gallagher’s appreciation of client requirements and commitment to quality ensures that clients remain delighted with the service being provided and consistently high performance from all aspects of the business.  Mr Gallagher previously served for twenty-two years in the British Army, primarily in finance and administration.  In between his Army career and joining Prometheus, Mr Gallagher worked with two highly successful start-up security companies in the private security industry.

Dr Alastair Nicol

Director

Dr Alastair Nicol is a Consultant in Sport and Exercise Medicine and has particular expertise in planning and co-ordination of medical support operations, including Humanitarian Assistance operations. He has worked with a wide variety of specialist medical units within the Army and has many years of experience in planning and delivering both emergency and primary health care to some of the UK's most elite soldiers in remote areas around the globe. Dr Nicol is a highly regarded instructor, designing, directing and teaching on a variety of trauma and sports medicine courses in the UK and abroad. His extensive expertise in sports medicine makes him ideal to work with civilian expeditions, outdoor sports and adventure travellers. Dr Nicol has been the Head of Medical Services and Doctor for the Scotland team at the last two Commonwealth Youth Games, and has been appointed to the Scotland medical team for the Commonwealth Games in Delhi later this year. He also remains actively involved with the Scotland rugby team and as National Governing Body Doctor for the British Bobsleigh team.  He recently deployed on an expedition to the Skeleton Coast in Namibia, and is well qualified as the Course Director of the ExpeMed Course.

Dr Charles Deakin

Director

Charles is a highly experienced cardiothoracic anaesthetist and pre-hospital care practitioner. He has also worked with London Helicopter Emergency Medical Services and is chairman of his local pre-hospital care scheme. He is well known in the field of resuscitation, holding the prestigious position of co-chairing the International Liaison Committee on Resuscitation's Advanced Life Support Group. He currently advises the Royal National Lifeboat Institute and sits on its Medical and Survival Committee. Dr Deakin is also an internationally respected academic and author of many publications.

Mr David Preece

Pharmacist

A pharmacist with 25 years experience, Mr Preece started his career as a Clinical Pharmacist specialising in Cardiology, Palliative Care and Parenteral Nutrition. After ten years he branched into Community Pharmacy but retained his clinical input by becoming the first pharmacist in the UK to run a full anticoagulation clinic. With his experience, he is able to ensure the correct legal and governance aspects relating to the management of drugs and medicines by Prometheus personnel both in the UK and overseas. He is also a 'Responsible Person', allowing us to hold a Home Office Licence to supply drugs in Schedules 2, 3, 4 part 1 and 5, and a MHRA Wholesale Dealer's Licence.

Mr Andy Purdie

Chief Instructor

Andy is an experienced state registered paramedic with particular expertise in Chemical, Biological, Radiological and Nuclear Medicine where he helped develop new procedures for dealing with casualties in CBRN environments. He is recently retired from the British Army where he served for 21 years as a Combat Medical Technician with the Royal Army Medical Corps serving in a variety of operational theatres, as well as working with UK Special Forces. As a Prometheus instructor, Andy has provided medical training and support throughout Europe, the Middle East and Africa. In the past year, he has worked as a medic in Pakistan, Europe and extensively throughout Africa. In his spare time, Andy works as an MFR volunteer in the Bromyard & Leominster area.
