Mongol Derby - Medic's Blog - 15th August 2011
Mon 15th Aug – The volcano and a broken arm. I’m now back in UB earlier than planned – I guess as an expedition medic flexibility is needed all the time as accidents can happen anywhere and at
any time. This morning Pete and I, along with some of the vets and riders, climbed the volcano. It was higher, steeper, and more difficult than anyone had predicted, but we were rewarded with stunning views and a beautiful lily-filled pond in the crater. Catherine had been horse-riding with one of the vets and as we started the walk back to the camp one of the staff came to find Pete and me to say she’d been kicked in the face by a horse and we were urgently needed. Luckily things were not as bad as we’d feared at first, although her elbow was quite sore. After we’d cleaned her up, sutured inside her lip, and given some IV antibiotics for the deep elbow wound, I escorted her back to UB. The drive took a good ten hours by which time thankfully Catherine was starting to feel a lot better. X-rays at the SOS Medical Clinic unfortunately confirmed a compound, comminuted fracture of the olecranon, which will need an operation, a few chipped teeth, but luckily no facial fractures.
