Tues 2nd Aug – The clinic and the start camp. This morning the three of us visited the SOS Medical Clinic across town to pick up some pre-ordered oxygen and IV fluids. We had a quick look around and chatted to the manager about the practicalities and logistics of evacuating someone by helicopter should the need arise. I think we were all reassured by the professional nature of the clinic,Gers at the Start of Camp and feel pleased to have them involved - although of course we hope not to need to go back there until the end to return the (hopefully unused) oxygen. This afternoon we finally got out into the countryside as we drove up to the start camp about 40km out of UB. I can’t believe how beautiful it is out here. The grass is very green thanks to the heavy rain, and released a strong herby smell as the cars drove over it. A diverse array of wild flowers add purples, pinks and yellow to the various shades of green grass, and the insects provide a low level background humming sound. The accommodation at the start camp is comfortable – mattresses on the ground inside gers (circular, portable, lattice-framed tents), a dining tent, and a shower and toilet block.
