Dr Alastair Nicol - Scotland Team Doctor, Commonwealth Games 2010
The XIX Commonwealth Games in Delhi finished in a flurry of colour, dance and lots of similar music. A great spectacle, with lots of energy, which left us wondering how we could better it in Glasgow in 2014. Well firstly, fireworks. I could have done a better job from my back garden, and while they came from the top of the stadium (which did look good), the local council would provide a better spectacle, and for a lot longer.
So what did the Glasgow 2014 team offer at the flag handover ceremony? The Red Hot Chilli Pipers and 250 dancers in an outrageous tartan! Just what you see every day in the west coast of Scotland. It was however an excellent contrast to the Indian cultural show and set the scene nicely for 2014.
So India managed to deliver an excellent Games, which I expected all along. Money was not an issue, just time. They were always going to deliver at the venues - it was just that they left everything to the last minute. And the quality of the finish was really quite poor, considering they are planning on selling the flats off for large amounts of money.
It was a superb experience, and a great pleasure to be part of an outstanding team.
